Trusting the Director
[Adam], where are you?
Genesis 3:9
God takes His stand in the great meeting of His people.
Psalm 82:1 NLV
Right now, I am looking at a list of fourteen names. The list contains the names of fourteen directors—both of the artistic and spiritual kind—who made the writing of this book a possibility. Who made me a possibility, in a way. I wish I could trot out each of their impactful stories one by one. Lighting room pep talks. Pastors who always picked up the phone. Insecurity squelchers and confidence builders. On and on the contribution of good directors goes. Each of them dropped a pebble into the waters of my life, and the concentric circles ripple to this day.
Even if you’ve never stood on the stage one moment in your life, you have been impacted for good, for ill, or even neutrally, by directors. A director’s job description is contained in their very name. Above all, directors provide direction. Anyone who provides direction is, in essence, a type of director. Think “leader.” Think “mentor.” Think “teacher.” Think “boss.” Think “cornerman” or “cornerwoman.” I’m sure, like me, you’ve had those key directors and teachers who have shown up in your life at the right time.
Among a million other things, directors provide thoughtful, careful, long-term mapping and strategy. They say, “Look team, this is where we’re going.” Or, in an actor’s case, “This is the way the scene must be played for the story to make sense.”
As I look back on my life—in the theater and in the kingdom—great directors have influenced me infinitely. Aside from taking off the character shoes and exchanging my false name for an authentic one, little has assisted me in finding my light more than the beacon-light of good directors. The best ones have lifted me and gently drawn out gifts I didn’t know were hiding under the debris of my life. Others have helped me stand in the light God was creating when I would have rather stooped in the shadows. Still others sheltered me with their presence.
As I glance at my Great Directors list, I notice an amazing thing: I trusted them. Every one.
